Pet treats

Have a hungry pup?

If you have a food motivated dog, you know the power of a delicious snack. Unfortunately, fun pet treats can get expensive and is an unnecessary additional cost that when budget is tight falls to the side. Instead, making homemade treats can not only reduce cost, but also allows you to control the ingredients and make it even healthier.
Below are two recipes, one savoury and one sweet, to suit every pup's taste.
Savoury Chicken and Sweet Potato Biscuits
Ingredients:
1 cup cooked and shredded chicken (no skin, bones or seasoning)
1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato or pumpkin
1/4 cup bone broth (use Bella & Boots' dog-safe bone broth)
2 cups dog safe flour such as buckwheat, oat, or coconut flour
1/4 cup rolled oats
1 egg
1 tablespoon coconut oil
Combine sweet potato, flour, oats and egg and mix until its smooth. Add the bone broth and coconut oil and mix until well combined. Adjust flour amount as necessary to form a workable but not crumbly dough. Stir in the chicken. Cut either with cookie cutters and lay on a baking sheet, or press into a silicone-safe muffin tin or mould.
Bake at 180 degrees for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Place the biscuits on the prepared baking tray, leaving a bit of space between them.
Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack and store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week, or freeze them for longer shelf life.

Peanut Butter Doggie Biscuits

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups dog friendly flour
1 egg
1 cup peanut butter
2 tablespoons honey
1 mashed banana

Start with 2 1/2 cups almond flour (other gluten free flours, or healthier versions like wholewheat flour also work) and combine with one egg. Add 1 cup of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of honey and one mashed banana. The banana adds flavour and nutritional value, such as potassium, fibre and vitamin C. Alternatively, one cup of water, or bone broth/ chicken stock can replace the banana, for a different flavour and nutritional value.

Combine until it resembles a cookie dough.  Roll out the dough onto a floured surface into 1/2 inch thick slab, then use a cookie cutter to cut out the biscuits. Dog bone biscuit cutters are cute, but any similar sized shape will work.

Bake in a 180 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Keep an eye out for your biscuits, as different shapes or varied thickness account for different cooking times.

Once the biscuits are firm and cooled, you can feed to your pet as a delicious, baked treat.

These are easy, delicious treats to supplement your pet’s daily Bella & Boots portion. You can find a vet-approved feeding guide here on our website and treat your pet for a morning or after-dinner snack.
