How Buying Bella and Boots protects our oceans
While your pet might be the cutest animal on the planet, they’re one of millions of creatures in our ecosystem. Despite spending most of the time inside, or even on your bed, they also enjoy much of the same facets about our beautiful coast as the rest of us. They enjoy the beautiful lush forestland, natural farms and the beautiful waterways.
The nutrient-dense soil, sunshine and swathes of green grass and small hills across the region is great for agricultural farming. The Sunshine Coast is home to many kinds of different animal and produce farms, including our clever farmers at Bendele, Gooralie and the Elliot’s farm where we get our favourite local cuts of meat. These cuts of meat are sold on our shelves in our Bella and Boots packs, as well as our pet snacks and meat cut offs. Our high-quality cuts are packed with the nutrients from the earth and a delicious addition to your favourite pets food. It gives your pet the energy and healthy bones and joints that they need to enjoy the beautiful beaches we live at.
Other waterways around the coast include the Maroochydore river and lakes and estuaries nestled in the small areas around our mountains and forestland. If your pet loves to take a dip in the water on a hot day, you know what we’re talking about.
Unfortunately, those waterways can be put at risk by traditional agriculture farming in the area. In traditional agriculture, heavy rainfall, floods, and crop watering in grain farms can lead to much runoff which enters into our waterways. 1 This runoff includes chemicals like pesticides, insecticides, fertilisers, GMO’s and animal waste are picked up from the soil and run into our waterways.
This runoff can have severe consequences for the delicate ecosystem of our oceans and freshwater environments. Bleached and dead coral, disease introduction to sea life, water pollution which can make animals sick and otherwise make our waterways dirty and non-regenerative 2.
Water pollution and disease could make our waterways inaccessible for your pet, leaving them (and you) nowhere safe to go to cool off on a hot day. Luckily for all of us, there are things that can be done to reduce the destruction of our aquatic environments, and you’re doing it already!
Organic farming reduces the consequences for our waterways. 3 Without use of pesticides, run off is limited and safer for the oceans. The aforementioned organic farms we work with at Sunshine Coast Organic Meats are making great strides in reducing the impact of agriculture on our Earth. They protect our waterways by ensuring any runoff is as natural as it can be, so when it reaches our waterways it is free of damaging chemicals 4 .
At Bella and Boots, we do our best, too. Using meat cut offs like the bones and cartilage pieces which are included in our Bella and Boots food packs also helps to reduce impact on our waterways by reducing the amount of agriculture demand and reducing food waste which can also contribute to general pollution. We make sure every one of our footprints is as small as possible, and worth every step.
