Keep Your Pet Cool This Summer

Keep Your Pet Cool This Summer

Summer has officially begun and with the first day of December comes temperatures reaching over 28°C. For many dog breeds, heat like this can be very difficult to manage without help from their loved ones. Thick-coated breeds like the Akita, malamute, chow chow, as well as smaller breeds like boxers, frenchies, bulldogs and terriers with shorter faces struggle with the summer heat. Even sighthound dogs with very little hair or fat can suffer heat stroke in humid, high temperatures. In Australia, many dogs are three times more likely to get heatstroke during summer days.

There are a lot of things you can do to help your dog stay cool in the heat. Access to ventilation and air flow such as a window, fan or even aircon can help keep their environment cool. Specifically designed dog beds or mattresses for air flow and cooling can help, too, as well as cooling mats designed specifically for dogs. Access to cool areas such as on tile or in the shade can help, too, though keep in mind the impacts on the joints on hard surfaces.

Providing cold water or water with ice in can also help them regulate their temperature, as well as cold or frozen food/treats. Your pet can enjoy the mental stimulation of chewing or licking something frozen whilst cooling them down. Win-Win! Freeze a block of unseasoned bone broth as a little popsicle for an added nutrient boost.

Avoiding exercise in the middle of a sunny day can help protect your pet from the heat. Limit their walks and outside play to before 8am and after 6pm in the height of summer. Alternatively, you can provide a kiddie pool/ dog pool for them to splash and cool down in. On walks, consider buying a cooling vest or collar to wear and dog booties if they are likely to come in contact with hot pavement.

It's also important to keep in mind that good nutrition is an important part of keeping your pet healthy in all circumstances, including summer. While it may be hard for your pet to eat their food if they feel hot and uncomfortable, you should encourage them the best you can. Keep their stainless steel bowl cold by putting it in the fridge or freezer, and defrost their food in the fridge to keep it at colder temperatures. Keep well-stocked with highly nutritious food to ensure their body is performing their best and prepared to keep them healthy and safe.

All of this can ensure your pet is comfortable, safe and cool during the hot months.
